What can you expect from the NHS after noticing that your child has hair loss
The first thing to do when you notice that your child is losing hair is to get an appointment with your GP.
When you see your GP about your child's hair loss
At this appointment your GP will ask some questions to see if there is an identifiable reason behind the hair loss. This may involve taking some blood tests.
Alopecia is a skin condition and dermatologists diagnose and treat it. Your GP may offer you an appointment with a dermatologist.
At the appointment with a dermatologist
Dermatologists are based in most local hospitals. Your GP will know where your nearest dermatologist is. At the appointment with the dermatologist he or she will make a diagnosis of the type of alopecia (for example
alopecia areata, patchy hair loss). They may also request a few more tests.
If the dermatologist feels that your child might benefit from treatment then they will discuss any treatment options with you and your child. Remember the options are limited and may have side effects. For more information on treatments click here.
You can also discuss
NHS wigs with your dermatologist who would know the wig provision policy of your local hospital.
The dermatologist would then normally offer your child a follow up appointment.
