I’ve been out a couple of times with someone. Should I tell them I have alopecia?

Some people with alopecia like to keep it a secret from pretty much everyone except their family and a few really close friends.

When they start to date someone, it can be very difficult to know when and if you should tell them that you have alopecia. In my experience, the more you fancy them - the harder it is!

Making your decision

Remember it’s completely up to you whether or not you tell someone. If you’re not sure, try to answer these questions:
  • What is the best thing that could happen if you do?
  • What is the worst thing that could happen if you do?
  • What is the best thing that could happen if you don’t?
  • What is the worst thing that could happen if you don’t?
  • What do you feel most comfortable with?
  • If you don’t tell them now, will it be easier or harder later?
Talk these questions through with a close friend or a family member that you can talk to about this kind of thing. You might want to ask them to let you talk without responding or giving advice - just to let you get straight in your mind what you want to do. Remember, it's your decision - no one can make it for you.

Going for it

If your certain you want to tell your new squeeze about your alopecia, I've given a few tips below.

Ali P's tips on telling your hot date your big secret

  1. Make sure you're certain first - talk to a friend or family member and use my questions to help you make your decision

  2. Think hard about how to tell your date and practice with a close friend and in your headPrepare yourself for a good reaction but think about how you'd handle a really bad one - maybe plan what you'll say and do. If they're worth going out with, and they like you as much as they say they do, it will be fine. If not - good riddance!

  3. Do something that makes you feel extra confident before you see them

  4. Relax - have a long bath or shower and listen to some chilled out music for 30 minutes. Be yourself, hold your head up high and go for it!

Good luck
