This question comes from our Alopecia UK website
but we thought you might like to see it too. It's answered by one of Alopecia UK's partons, model and actress Margaret Baker.
Now that my hair has started to grow back, do you think I should get hair extensions?
Hi Margaret, I was wondering if you could help me – I’m 15 and live in Edinburgh, Scotland. I had alopecia areata and it started last xmas. I missed 5 months of school because of my confidence. I guess I just couldn’t understand what was happening to me. I am back at school now and my hair has started to grow back. I wear a hat in class and everyone has accepted it. My question to you is; now that my hair has started to grow back, do you think I should get hair extensions? I would really appreciate it if you could give me your advice, it would mean a lot. Thank you,
Dear Jodie, I want to commend you for being brave in sharing your experience with your classmates. It takes tremendous courage to share your voice, and can be especially difficult in a school setting. I am glad that you have found a way to have fun with your Alopecia and play around with hats. I too am a hat lover and am always looking to expand upon my collection. Regarding the extensions, I personally would shy away from them as I think it may add to your scalp's current stress. The weight of the extensions may lead to more hair loss. However, if you are okay with that as a possibility, then I would say go for it. Otherwise, it may be fun and less risky to invest in some trendy wigs. I have an extensive wig collection which allows me to play multiple roles and change my look according to my mood on any given day. It's important to remember that we have many options and the fun comes in exploring them :)
